Getting Ready for Your Tarot Decan Walk: Journey Through the 36 Faces
A Decan Walk is a 360-day journey, and I’ll be the first to admit: I’m relatively new to this practice myself! I’ve recently dove headfirst into the world of #TarotTube and #TarotCommunity, and I absolutely love the wisdom found there.
As I began preparing for my own walk, I realized that the real secret to staying committed is having the right tools nearby. I’ve spent hours watching your videos and listening to the masters to see how they handle these cycles. My goal was to take all the resources they’ve shared, combine them with a few of my own, and create a “Master Hub” to make this journey accessible for everyone.
So what is a decan walk?

What Is a Decan Walk? A Tarot + Astrology Practice for Following the Zodiac Through the Year
If you’ve spent any time in the #TarotTube or #Tarottube space recently, chances are you’ve heard people talking about “decan walking.” I’m still fairly new to the practice myself, but honestly? I completely understand why so many readers fall in love with it.
A decan walk combines astrology, tarot, journaling, observation, and spiritual practice into a year-long journey through the zodiac. Instead of only working with the twelve zodiac signs as broad archetypes, decan walking breaks the zodiac into 36 smaller energetic phases called decans.
Each zodiac sign contains 30 degrees. Those 30 degrees are divided into three 10-degree sections, or decans. Each decan has its own:
- planetary ruler
- symbolism
- tarot correspondence
- emotional atmosphere
- themes and lessons
A decan lasts roughly 10 days, meaning the energy shifts gradually throughout the year as the Sun moves through each section of the zodiac.
For many tarot readers, these decans are connected to the Minor Arcana through the Golden Dawn tarot correspondences. For example:
- Taurus 3 corresponds with the 7 of Pentacles
- Aries 1 corresponds with the 2 of Wands
- Scorpio 3 corresponds with the 7 of Cups
The result is a practice that feels deeply cyclical, reflective, creative, and personal.
What Do You Actually Do During a Decan Walk?
That’s the beautiful part: there’s no single “correct” way to do it. It is a practice that you personally get to cultivate.
Some people:
- pull tarot cards daily
- journal throughout the decan
- meditate on the associated tarot card
- create art or collages
- track dreams and emotions
- work with planetary magic
- build altars
- study mythology and symbolism
- follow seasonal shifts in nature
- use the decans for shadow work and self-reflection
Personally, I’ve been really enjoying using tarot, astrology notes, playlists, visual collage work, and journaling prompts to immerse myself in each decan’s atmosphere.
The practice makes the year feel alive in a completely different way.
How I Found Decan Walking
I have to give a huge thank you to the TarotTube community because this practice absolutely exploded onto my radar through all of you.
I especially love the podcasts and resources from Mary K. Greer and T. Susan Chang, who wrote the book 36 Secrets.
Two books that have been especially helpful for me are:
- 36 Secrets: A Decanic Journey Through the Minor Arcana of the Tarot
- Tarot Correspondences
I’ve also been inspired by resources shared by:
And I absolutely wanted to mention Jamie Sawyer and her incredible casting sticker resources:
Why I Made This Resource
One thing I noticed while starting my own decan walk was that information was scattered everywhere across videos, podcasts, books, printables, Instagram posts, spreadsheets, and handwritten notes.
So I decided to compile everything into one place.
This resource pulls together information and inspiration I’ve gathered from creators, teachers, podcasts, and the wider tarot community, along with some additional resources I found while researching and studying on my own. I’ve tried my best to give credit wherever possible, as this practice has been shaped by so many generous people who have shared their knowledge.
My goal is simple:
I want to make decan walking more approachable and accessible for anyone who feels curious about it.
Whether you’re brand new to tarot, deeply into astrology, or just looking for a more intentional spiritual practice throughout the year, I hope this page helps you get started.
And if you find value here, you’re always welcome to buy me a coffee and help support the work I’m building through Official Meliora.

Okay, so let’s get personal. The point is, it doesn’t have to be beautiful; you just have to start somewhere. The beauty of a practice is that it evolves and changes. It’s not made of stone.

Decan Walk FAQS
Everything you need to know about decan walking! Get in touch →
What is a Decan Walk?
A decan walk is a spiritual and reflective practice where you intentionally move through the 36 zodiac decans throughout the year in real time. Each decan lasts roughly 10 days and is connected to specific tarot cards, planetary rulers, themes, and symbolism.
Many people combine tarot, astrology, journaling, meditation, creativity, and ritual work during their decan walk.
What is a Decan?
In astrology, each zodiac sign contains 30 degrees. Those 30 degrees are divided into three smaller sections called decans.
Each decan:
- spans about 10 degrees
- has its own planetary ruler
- carries unique themes and symbolism
- corresponds to a Minor Arcana tarot card in Golden Dawn tradition
There are 36 total decans in the zodiac year..
Do I need to know astrology to do a Decan Walk?
Not at all. Many people learn astrology through decan walking. You can start very simply by:
following the calendar
pulling the corresponding tarot card
journaling your observations
noticing repeating themes and emotions
You do not need to be an advanced astrologer to begin
Do I need a special tarot deck?
No. Any tarot deck you already connect with can work.
That said, Rider-Waite-Smith based decks are often the easiest for beginners because most decan correspondences are rooted in Golden Dawn and Rider-Waite traditions.
I’ll be posting more on decks here soon!
Is there a “right” way to do a Decan Walk?
No. Some people follow exact astrological ingress times down to the minute. Others simply follow approximate calendar dates.
Some people do elaborate ritual work. Others spend five quiet minutes journaling with the tarot card of the decan.
The point is connection and observation — not perfection.
